The Members of the Uganda Bankers Association (UBA) elected Mr. Mathias Katamba as their new chairman during their annual General Meeting. In addition, he will be replacing Mr. Patrick Mweheire who served from the year 2018 to the end of 2019. Meanwhile, the replaced Mr. Mweheire Katamba is the chief Executive officer of DFCU bank Uganda.
The other new members elected on the executive committee of Uganda Bankers Association include -:
Ms. Sarah Arapta, Citibank CEO as Vice-Chair, Mr. Varghese Thambi, CEO Diamond Trust Bank as Hon Treasurer,
Mr. Sam Ntulume, CEO NC Bank as Hon. Auditor, Mr. Albert Saltson, CEO Standard Chartered Bank, Committee Member, and Ms. Veronica Namagembe, CEO Pride Microfinance (MDI), Committee Member.
The new team however takes over the responsibility at a time when the industry has registered a significant improvement in the areas of profitability. In addition, and credit extension, channels, and growth in the assets over the previous year 2019.
“In 2019, two financial institutions for example opportunity bank and Ariland Bank were issued with commercial Banking Licenses. Therefore, bringing the total number of tier 1 banks to 26 and highlighted the total assets of the Banking industry has increased by a whole 16.7% from UGX 28.1 trillion. In addition at the end of December the year 2018 to UGX 32.8 trillion at the end of December the year 2019,” Patrick Mweheire, the Chairman Uganda Bankers Association noted.
