Over 10 feared dead, as fire guts St. Bernard’s secondary school, Mannya Rakai District

It’s a sad moment at St. Bernard’s S.S.S Mannya; Kifamba Sub-county Kakuuto – Rakai District after the boys’ dormitory was burnt down in the past night at around 11:40pm leaving many students dead and others severely injured.

It’s alleged that the fire was lit on the S.3 dormitory after locking the main door both in and out and showered the dwellers with petrol.

The information coming in confirms 11 students dead and more injured, and the death toll is expected to increase.

Inside sources narrates that some students went into a strike of recent to the extent of burning 2 mattresses and fire was ceased from the same implicated dorm.

The school management later suspended the culprits who are currently commuting from a near by trading center to finish their form 4 exams.


The locking of the door didn’t only stop at the dorm but also the warden was locked inside and he couldn’t help,” Ahimbisibwe Derrick, former student reports.

It was observed that the time this incident happened no teacher was at school nor the security guards to rescue the situation.

Ahimbisibwe, narrates that it’s the form S.6 candidates who by the time were reading their books that ran to rescue their colleagues whom also lacked enough equipment to break into the room.

Mr. Kabogere a brother to Brigadier Kayanja is the one who rescued the situation when he rolled in with a heavy hammer and hit the door. He adds.

Ambulances from St. Bernard’s Mannya Health and Kalisizo hospital got in arms at around 2:00 am and started rushing the affected to Kitovu Hospital Masaka.

One student has been detained by police to help in the investigations of the case.
