Makerere University suspends guild elections over EC incompetence, hooliganism

Makerere University management has today postened guild elections over students electoral commission incompetence and hooliganism among students.

The decision reached at after an emergency meeting today afternoon attended by Cyrico Kabagambe the Dean of students, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe the University  Vice Chancellor – VC and  ACP Enock Abeine the makerere University security In-charge.

 

The three officials anonymously agreed to postpone the guild elections which were scheduled to take place tomorrow Friday, 2, March, 2018 until further notice after suspected hooliganism and the incompetence of students Electoral  Commission – EC.

According to the official statement by the University Management they observed that the EC was not ready to conduct the elections since it had not finalised putting in place all the necessary requirements few hours to the election time.

They have also suspended all EC ongoing activities and campaigns with immediate effect till further notice.

The guild presidential race was hit by hooliganism and violence over the last two weeks that emerged into exchange of brawls and stones among rival camps.

16 students were nominated for the guild presidential race however, two candidates Bruno Bayube and Silver Kent were yesterday disqualified for lack of academic requirements.
