The Kyambogo University Academic Information Management System (AIMS) which runs the students portal has been paralyzed since the institution commenced their end-of-semester examinations on Monday.
Cyclone Times has since established that students and staff of the Banda-based university can hardly process reference numbers for tuition payment, print examination cards, and view payment invoices.
Several ICT support staff couldn’t use the system to help the sagging students’ line at the Computer Center and ICT office at the Faculty of Arts.
The system has become an on and off for both web and mobile applications, a situation that has created tension in the university.
The system instability has increased worries within the management over students who are likely to sit for exams without authentic examination cards since the examination card verification system module has also been inaccessible since yesterday.
Access to services like programmes manager, a module in AIMS that manages all the programs course units which feed results module and other system services, emits errors. This displays “unable to connect to server” wordings on the screen.
However, the system sometimes allows login access in the normal student’s portal but with endless file loading.
Our news desk has also established that the system can only serve 3 students at a time and eventually hangs.
A few staff with high-level accounts access have since tried to work around and find a way of generating reference numbers and printing exam cards at a slow pace.
According to the directly handling Staff;
Some administrative accounts have lost access which has denied access to some high level tools of the system.
The system’s working experience is too bad, and one staff thinks the problem is with the system server and he suggested that it may need cleaning.
“Our hands are tied up, people can neither pay nor print their examination cards. I am stuck here”, another source added.
“It is very unstable. It’s on and off…It came on a few times now it is giving an error message. What we are doing is we keep refreshing and trying again. Then luckily we log in and can serve the students. Otherwise; it’s very unstable.“ another detail revealed.
AIMS is used by all the public and some private universities to manage students records and process tuition payments as a result we got interested to find out how universities are experiencing the system.
Our sources have also revealed that Universities like Makarere University had the service running normally early this morning.
This pushed us to reach out to the software firm Zeenode Ltd which manages the AIMS system on behalf of the government of Uganda.
Speaking to Mr. Katongole Joseph a technical staff in Zeenode Ltd, he told this website that Kyambogo AIMS system is simply experiencing a technical problem which they’re working tirelessly to solve.
“The system is simply experiencing a technical problem, and we are doing our best to restore it back,” Katongole said on a phone call.
It is also true that a system can experience technical problems at any time and mostly at pick hours and it is another aspect one needs to believe. Confidence is rising that the system will normalize and service delivery continues as usual from Kyambogo.
