Rwanda Premier League side Rayon Sports has suffered a huge blow after losing their inspirational skipper Eric Rutanga to Police FC.
The left-back declined to renew his contract at Rayon Sports and joins the Disciplined Forces side on a free transfer.
“Rutanga is now our player until 2022. We hope his quality and experience will add strength to the team,” Police Secretary-General, CIP Maurice Karangwa said.
Eric Rutanga signed a two-year deal with his new club Police FC.
Rayon Sports are having their worst season in years and players and staff have opted to jump ship as the club faces financial and administrative crisis.
Rutanga becomes the fourth player to quit controversy-ridden Rayon in the last two weeks.
Rayon Sports struggling
Rutanga joins his teammate Eric Iradukunda at Police, while the duo of goalkeeper Yves Kimenyi and Eric Irambona crossed to SC Kiyovu.
Both Rutanga and Kimenyi still had one year left on their contracts but were desperate to leave as the club could not honor their contracts.
Another Rayon Sports player whose future is still in balance is Herve Rugwiro.
The former APR defender is believed to be on his way out after agreeing terms with SC Kiyovu.
Rayon Sports had hogged media limelight in recent days for all the wrong reasons.
The club president Sadate Munyakazi has been suspended from football activities for six months.
Last week he admitted to using money to influence Rayon’s league matches.
He however, revealed that over $1 million was stolen between 2014 and 2019 by the club’s officials who used part of the cash to fix matches.
He blamed his woes at the club on unnamed people who are, according to him, opposed to what he is doing at the club.
Rayon Sports finished second on the log last season with 50 points seven points behind champions APR.
