City status, Jinja district to be divided into two entities

Jinja district officials have geared up preparations of transforming Jinja district into a city.
According to the Mayor Jinja municipality, Majid Batambuze, the local government technically guided them on what to do
“There was a meeting at the Ministry of Local Govt, chaired by Hon Butime, the combined leadership of the Municipality of Jinja and the District of Jinja, having been technically guided by the Ministry of Local Govt,” the mayor noted.

Batambuzi added that they unanimously agreed to create two entities out of the current District of Jinja.
“These shall be the City of JInja and the District of Jinja.The city of Jinja shall be comprised of the Current Municipality, Bugembe, Mafubira and Budondo.The District of Jinja shall be comprised of Buwenge, Butagaya, Busedde, Buyengo and Kakira,” the Mayor expounded.

Batambuze further noted that Jinja City shall have two divisions namely; JInja South and JInja North. JInja South shall cover the current municipality and JInja North take up Buwenge, Budondo and Mafubira.

According the Mayor, the city of JInja shall have a woman member of parliament and other MPs to represent parliamentary constituencies which shall be decided on by the current leadership and demarcated by the Electoral Commission.
“The new configuration shall come with creation of a new Municipality of Buwenge and several Town Councils,” he explained.
It is believed that there were many underlying considerations behind making Jinja a city but foremost amongst them was; to ensure that Busoga does not lose out, creation of viable economic entities
Others include, enhanced service delivery, greater representation at both national and local levels and bigger share of the nations Cake.
