Before the emerging of the deadly Coronavirus that has left hundreds dead all the world and millions starving due to the lockdowns that were imposed in different countries, June and July were a known month for ordinations of different dioceses in Uganda but this time around it’s totally different since the catholic church has entirely gone silent about the ordinations following the closure of churches and schools to which the seminaries that produce candidates to the different levels of ordinations.
Revisiting the ordinations of last year of different dioceses in which many Deacons were elevated to the priesthood and many 6th year seminarians were elevated to the Deaconate and these are supposed to be this year’s Ordained Priests. Below are some of the statistics of the waiting Deacons from different dioceses except Jinja Diocese which had its ordinations on 20th-February-2020 before the lockdown.
Having ordained only one the priest last year 2019 by the names of Rev. Fr. Kuteesa Martin Mugagga Lubowa, the Diocesan vocations director presented five (5) major seminarians to the Bishop of Lugazi His Lordship Rt.Rev.Christopher Kakooza who were ordained Deacons and their priesthood ordination awaits this year 2020 if not postponed and these include;
- Rev. Dn. Tom GAfaranga of Namagunga Parish from Ggaba National Seminary
- Rev. Dn. Deogratius Mugambe of Kitimbwa Parish from Ggaba National Seminary
- Rev. Dn. Emmanuel Kasajja of Lugazi Parish from KinyamasikaNational Seminary
- Rev. Dn. Anthony Kizito of Nyenga Parish from KinyamasikaNational Seminary
- Rev. Dn. Joseph Wamala of Kiwanga Parish from St. Mbaaga’s Major Seminary
In 2019, His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga ordained 15 priests instead of 16following the death of Rev. Dn. Andrew Brian Mayega (RIP) a week before the ordinations and 12 Deacons whose priesthood ordination this year hangs in balance.
The last year 2019, Bishop Acquirino Francis Kibira elevated 12 major seminarians to the Deaconate whom God willing will be ordained a priest this year 2020 and only 3 priests of which the two (Rev. Fr. Katuramu Isingoma and Rev. Fr. Andrew Kato Katuramu) were twin brothers.
As 7 priests got ordained by His Grace Paul Bakyenga now the Emeritus of the Archdiocese in 2019, 9 Deacons were elevated to the Deaconate, and its these Deacons that whose priesthood ordination hangs in balance.
Much as on the 8th-July-2020, Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok released the priesthood ordination banns that will be aired out on Sundays of 12th,19th, and 26th July 2020 during the Eucharistic celebrations on radios and Televisions for the three (3) deacons namely;
- Rev.Dn. Stephen Odwongo of Lira Cathedral
- Rev.Dn. Daniel Olila of Aloi Catholic parish and
- Rev.Dn. George Olwanda Ochieng of Amolatar Catholic Parish
This however did not cite the ordination date on which these men of God will be elevated to the priesthood since in the same banns he (the bishop) put in writing the current situation.
The same situation looks similar to all other 13 catholic dioceses in the different regions of the country.
