At least 13 people have been killed after part of a church collapsed in South Africa, according to local media.

The incident reportedly happened on Thursday night while an Easter service was under way at the Pentecostal church in Dlangubo, KwaZulu-Natal province.

Some people who had gone for the Easter service were reportedly sleeping when the wall collapsed.

Heavy rain and winds are thought to have caused the collapse, according to police and emergency service officials quoted by News24.

Reports say six people were seriously hurt and 10 others suffered minor injuries.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele told News24 she believed people had also been sleeping inside the church when the wall came down.

Pictures of the collapse on social media show an entire side of the building has collapsed.
