Pope Francis appoints Bishop Paul Semwogerere to replace late Lwanga

Pope Francis has today appointed Bishop Paul Semwogerere of Kasana Luwero to serve as an acting Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese… In addition, as the church gets into plans of appointing a new Archbishop to take on the shoes of the fallen Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

Pope Francis’ message was relayed by His representative to Uganda, Archbishop Bianco Luigi during the burial of Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who was laid to rest at Rubaga Cathedral.

Who is Bishop Paul Semwogerere?

Semwogerere was born on the 30th of June in 1956 at Kisibi, Wakiso district under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala.

According to reports, he attended Kigero Primary school before going to Kisubi Boys Primary School… He later joined St. Maria Goretti Senior Secondary School Katende for his O-level.

Bishop Paul Semwogerere started his priesthood journey after he enrolled into St. Mbaaga Seminary Ggaba. According to credible sources, he was one of those few pioneers to join the seminary school in 1976.

His priesthood journey later proceeded with his 1978 admittance into Saint Francis de Sales Seminary, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A decision that was influenced by Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga and it earned him a Master’s degree in Divinity.

During his time in Milwaukee, he was by Archbishop of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee Rembert George Weakland ordained deacon.

On his return to Uganda, he was ordained into Priesthood by Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga, the then Archbishop of Kampala on 3rd June 1983.
