Ed Woodward makes Mauricio Pochettino his number one choice to replace Jose Mourinho

Ed Woodward remains reluctant to get rid of Jose Mourinho despite Manchester United’s woeful start to the season, though has identified Mauricio Pochettino as the outstanding candidate to replace him.

The Red Devils have endured a miserable week, drawing at home to Wolves and Valencia, knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Championship side Derby County and losing away to West Ham.

Mourinho’s position at the club is becoming increasingly precarious, while his relationship with several player – most notably club-record signing Paul Pogba – is at breaking point after a series of spats.

Although Zinedine Zidane has been heavily linked with the job, key figures at Old Trafford are not convinced he is the right fit, with Real Madrid having demanded a very different skillset.
