AFCON U-20: Uganda edge Tanzania in warm-up

Richard Basangwa scored the only goal for Uganda U-20 to beat counterparts Tanzania 1-0 on Wednesday night at Azam Complex Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

This was a warm-up game for the Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Mauritania 2021.

Uganda and Tanzania are the East and Central Africa zone (CECAFA) representatives in the U-20 AFCON.

The tournament is set to kick-off on 14th of this month.

Richard Basangwa headed what proved to be the match lone goal in the 42nd minute, connecting a well taken free kick by Bobosi Byaruhanga.

Uganda were awarded a penalty in the 55th minute after Samuel Jackson handed the ball inside the box.

However Bogere hit the post of Tanzania goal.

“We played so well but our intention was not to win it was to prepare the team to see how the players react in such a situation because our main focus in the final tournament in Mauritania.”

“We mainly want to see the shape of players by the time we start competing on points we shall be ready.”

“We are happy to play a quicker team like Tanzania it has given us good competition,” Byekwaso said.

Both Uganda and Tanzania will represent the CECAFA region at the AFCON U20 finals to be hosted by Mauritania.

Uganda are placed in Group A with hosts Mauritania, Cameroon and Mozambique.

Meanwhile Tanzania will play in Group C besides Ghana, Gambia and Morocco.

Group B includes Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Namibia and Central African Republic.
